Head, Eyes, Ears, Nose and Throat System

The body’s head, face, mouth, and neck regions from which the senses of smell, hearing, sight, and vision originate are complex units generally assessed in a sequential pattern.  The structures in the head, eyes, ears, nose, and throat (HEENT) affect every organ system controlling the body (Thompson, 2018).  

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. Review the basic anatomy and physiology of the HEENT system.
  2. Complete a comprehensive assessment of the HEENT system.
  3. Understand the normal findings of a focused HEENT assessment.
  4. Review common pathological signs and symptoms of HEENT dysfunction.
  5. Learn appropriate documentation of assessment findings.
  6. Practice and apply critical thinking skills through applicable case study review.
